Hebron, Palestine: A Brief Introduction
For Interviews, click the English or Arabic tabs at the top of the page.
For the past fifty years Hebron and all of the West Bank and Gaza have suffered from Israeli military occupation. Even though Palestinians have their own government, the Israeli army rules over the land and the people

This situation creates insecurity and many hardships for Palestinians, but they continue to pulse with life. The pages of this website present a window onto life in this beautiful and lively city and onto the people that live in it. The idea for the site derives from the one-dimensional portrait of Palestinians, and particularly of Hebronites, that is current in the media. It takes inspiration from the work of Brandon Stanton, seen in print and on the website Humans of New York, and by the work of Ali al-Hassani and friends in Jordan, seen . on Nas 'Amman and in print

The website also has a secondary goal, and that is to help beginning and intermediate students of the Arabic language improve their reading and comprehension skills. For that reason, the Arabic text on this page and on the "Humans" page in Arabic is enlarged, broadly spaced, and voweled to facilitate modern Arabic (MSA) vocalization. The English translations of the Arabic texts will assist AFL and ASL learners to
identify and comprehend new vocabulary without resorting to a dictionary or translation site, inshallah!i

Hebron: Historical City of The Friend
Hebron (al-Khalil in Arabic) is a large Palestinian city located about 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Jerusalem. It is inhabited by about 215,000 people.
The city has a long history. The Ibrahimi mosque located in the center of the Old City was built over the grave of Abraham, the father of the three monotheistic faiths: Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. The full name of the city is Khalil al-Rahman. The word “khalil” means friend, and “al-rahman” is one of the names of God in Islam. Abraham was a friend of God. Therefore he was known as Khalil al-Rahman, and the city where he is buried was named this name (too). The English name most commonly used internationally today for the city, "Hebron", is taken from the Biblical (and the modern) Hebrew name, Hevron (you can see the Hebrew to the right, in the Arabic-language section). The root of this word, haver (Hebrew found to the right)), means friend. People have lived in this place for thousands of years, since the days of Abraham

Britain began its invasion of Palestine in March 1917 and was faced with difficult battles against the Ottomans at Gaza. Its armies would not reach jerusalem, less than 100 kilometers to the north, until December of that year. In November 1917, Britain issued the Balfour declaration, promising its support for and facilitation of the creation in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people. This pledge was enshrined in the first lines of the League of Nations Mandate for Palestine, which was put in place in 1922 under British tutelage.
Twenty-five years later, the UN voted in November 1947 (UNGA Resolution 181) to partition into two states the disputed Mandate of Palestine

A regional war of sorts ensued in May 1948 with the withdrawal of British troops from the region -- marking the end of the Mandate -- and with the simultaneous unilateral declaration of the foundation of a Jewish state along the lines of the UN resolution. Although 1948 is called a war, the Israelis faced little real resistance from the poorly armed and uncoordinated Arab opposition. Its forces pushed easily beyond the borders of the Jewish state as delineated in UNGA 181. As a result of the hostilities that began immediately after the UN vote, an estimated 750,000 Palestinians became refugees, most of them forcibly expelled from their homes. They have never been allowed to return. Israel demolished many of the Palestinian villages. New settlements were built on some. Others were turned into national parks. Others remain empty, unused land. Zionist forces also perpetrated many massacres across Palestine. Recent documentary films, such as Israeli Lia Tarachansky’s 2013 “On the Side of the Road”, Palestinian citizen of Israel Hisham Zreiq’s “The Sons of Eilaboun” (2007), and American Benny Brunner’s “The Great Book Robbery” (2012), poignantly and powerfully portray events of the 1948 war and the remembered thoughts, feelings, and painful memories of both the perpetrators and victims of these inhumane acts. They join a long list of academic, journalistic, documentary, and fictional works that have looked critically at the founding of Israel and challenged the dominant historical narrative of its "miraculous creation against all odds and in the face of strong enemies". This list perhaps begins with the publication in 1949 of Israeli novelist S. Yizhar's Hebrew-language novella, Khirbet Khiz'eh (which was first translated into English only in 2008). Despite the wealth of evidence this body of work presents, Israel officially -- and even laughably, as more than a few have noted, for example popular Palestinian Israeli columnist Sayed Kashua -- continues to deny the Palestinian tragedy, the Nakba, as well as Israel's responsibility for it, i

In the aftermath of the 1948 war, Jordan annexed what has since come to be known as the West Bank. This name defines the area in relation to the Jordan River to its east. In mid-1967, Israel conquered this area in a lightening war, along with the Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights. While this war reunited the land of historical Palestine under one government, the peoples have remained separate. Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza came under Israeli military rule. They were not made citizens of Israel, nor were they permitted to become citizens. The Palestinian National Authority was established in 1994, as a result of the Oslo accords between the government of Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO; in Arabic, the Palestinian Liberation Organization). However, Israel continues to enjoy supreme authority. (For a summary of the division of authority in the West Bank since the Oslo accords, read the summary published by Btselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories ).i

Less than six months after the signing of the Oslo accords, and three months before the Palestinian National Authority would make its entrance into Palestine through Gaza and Jericho First (the May 1994 agreement between Israel and the PLO), a fateful massacre occurred in Hebron. Friday, 25 February 1994: it was yawm al-juma’ (the weekly day of congregational prayer for Muslims) in the middle of Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, and renewal in the Islamic calendar. That day was also the Jewish holiday of Purim, which commemorates the day more than two thousand years ago when Jews in Persia were spared from an order of mass execution. The Jewish holiday is celebrated annually by the reading of the Book of Esther, giving gift baskets of food, costume parties, special sweets, and intoxication. At dawn on this day, when Muslims were gathered for the first of their five daily prayers, an American-Israeli dual citizen from Brooklyn, a medical doctor and member of the IDF reserves, 38-year-old Baruch Goldstein, entered Hebron’s Ibrahimi mosque wearing his army uniform and began shooting. Twenty-nine men and boys were killed by Goldstein, and more than one hundred people were wounded before he was disarmed and killed. Soldiers’ bullets claimed more lives outside the mosque and at al-Ahli hospital, where the wounded were taken

The attack did not come without forewarning, however. For example, in the fall of 1993 eighteen mosque officials wrote a plea to Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin when the army took no action after incidents in which Goldstein had thrown acid on mosque prayer carpets and assaulted Muslim worshippers
|

The massacre caused outrage and protest against Israeli settlements and was condemned worldwide. One month after the massacre, the UN Security Council passed resolution 904 calling on Israel to confiscate settlers’ arms and to take measures to guarantee the safety and protection of Palestinian civilians

The Ibrahimi mosque was closed for months, and the city of Hebron was likewise closed, put on 24-hour curfew for months with only occasional, brief reprieve. Three members of the Jewish extremist group Kach were held in administrative detention for six months, then released. A main street of downtown Hebron, Shuhada Street, which passes by the mosque, was closed to Palestinian traffic. Stores and Palestinians’ front doors on this street were welded shut and remain forcibly closed today, as do other streets in the Old City. Barriers were erected in the Ibrahimi mosque, dividing it in two and thereby creating for the first time a separate, permanent area for Jewish prayer in the mosque. According to this system of division, the mosque is divided 335 days per year and open in its entirety to Jews for ten days and to Muslims for ten days, on religious holidays
It was stated in Article 7 and again in Article 9 of the January 1997 Protocol Concerning the Redeployment in Hebron agreed to by Israel and the PLO, that “Both sides reiterate their commitment to the unity of the City of Hebron, and their understanding that the division of security responsibility will not divide the city…both sides share the mutual goal that movement of people, goods, and vehicles within and in and out of the city will be smooth and normal, without obstacles or barriers.” According to the agreement, Shuhada Street was to be re-opened to Palestinian traffic within four months, at the level, “the same situation which existed prior to February 1994”. Preparations were to be financed and supervised by the United States. Instead, the division of the city has grown: exclusive Jewish areas have broadened; Palestinian freedom of movement has been further constrained; and the Old City struggles to maintain a semblance of its former life, marred by closures, a permanent Israeli army presence on the streets and on the rooftops and, additionally, Jewish settlers’ contempt and acts of violence which are rarely punished
